What is extrait de parfum?
Extrait de parfum is the highest concentration in perfumery. It contains a larger share of fragrance oil than an eau de parfum or an eau de toilette, which makes the scent feel fuller, deeper and more intimate. You may also see it called pure parfum or simply extrait. This collection brings together extraits from around twelve perfume houses, mostly from the Middle East and the Gulf region, complemented by a few other niche houses.
Because of the high concentration, an extrait often sits closer to the skin and unfolds slowly, from the first impression through the heart to a warm base. As a result, you usually need less than you might expect.
Notes and scent families in this selection
The extraits here vary widely, but a number of notes come back again and again:
- Warm and sweet: amber, vanilla and musk create a soft, enveloping base.
- Woody: cedar, sandalwood, vetiver and patchouli add depth and a dry, earthy tone.
- Spicy: spices bring warmth and a slightly peppery edge.
- Fresh: bergamot and other citrus fruits give the opening a lively character.
- Floral and powdery: jasmine, rose and powdery accords soften the composition and make it feel elegant.
- Fruity: berry notes add a juicy, sweet accent.
How to choose an extrait de parfum
Occasion and season
Warm notes such as amber, vanilla and spices tend to shine in autumn and winter and on evenings out. If a fragrance leans on bergamot, citrus or vetiver, it can also suit spring days or the office. With any concentrated fragrance, keep your surroundings in mind: in a small or busy space, a light hand is usually more pleasant.
Intensity
An extrait generally has more presence than an eau de parfum. If you prefer a subtle skin-scent feel, look for fragrances built around musk, sandalwood or powdery tones. If you want your fragrance to be noticed, amber, spices and patchouli are a bolder choice.
Men's and unisex fragrances
Many extraits in this selection are unisex, and some are clearly aimed at men. If you are looking for a men's fragrance, pay attention to woody, spicy and fresh notes. These work just as well for anyone who enjoys them: in the end your own taste matters more than the label.
How to apply extrait de parfum
Apply extrait de parfum to clean, lightly moisturised skin. Pulse points such as the wrists, the neck and the inner elbows are warm and help the scent bloom. Start with one or two sprays; you can always add more. Avoid rubbing your wrists together, as this can dull the top notes. On clothing a fragrance often stays noticeable for longer, but fragrance oil can mark delicate fabrics, so try a hidden spot first. You can also layer, for example over an unscented body lotion.
Try a sample first
A concentrated fragrance is not something to choose by nose alone. A scent smells different on a paper strip than on your skin, and it keeps changing as the day goes on. That is why we also offer samples and decants for many fragrances. This lets you wear a scent for a few days before you decide on a full bottle.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between extrait de parfum and eau de parfum?
An extrait de parfum contains a higher percentage of fragrance oil than an eau de parfum. This makes the scent feel fuller and deeper, and it usually develops more slowly on the skin. You often need less of an extrait to get the same effect.
Is extrait de parfum suitable for everyday wear?
Yes, as long as you adjust the amount. For daytime, choose a fragrance with fresh or soft notes such as bergamot, musk or sandalwood and use one or two sprays. Richer, spicier or sweeter fragrances often suit the evening better.
How many sprays of extrait de parfum should I use?
Start with one or two sprays on your pulse points, such as the wrists and neck. Because of the high concentration, an extrait quickly makes its presence felt. If the scent still seems subtle, you can always add another spray.
Is extrait de parfum for men or for women?
That depends on the fragrance. In this selection many extraits are unisex, and some are made specifically for men. The notes, whether woody, spicy, floral or sweet, often say more about how a scent smells than the label does.
Can I try an extrait de parfum before buying a full bottle?
For many fragrances we offer samples or decants. They let you wear an extrait de parfum on your own skin for a few days before choosing a larger bottle. Availability differs per fragrance.
